Understanding tarot as a therapeutic tool
“[Tarot cards] are sort of archetypal ideas, of a differentiated nature, which mingle with the ordinary constituents of the flow of the unconscious, and therefore it is applicable for an intuitive method that has the purpose of understanding the flow of life . . . lending itself to the reading of the conditions of the present moment…. You see, man always felt the need of finding an access through the unconscious to the meaning of an actual condition, because there is a sort of correspondence or a likeness between the prevailing condition and the condition of the collective unconscious.”
– Carl Jung, March 1933 Seminar

A Different Way of Understanding Yourself
Sometimes, talking about problems isn’t enough to get you unstuck. Maybe you understand your history and recognize a lot of your patterns. You might even know what you should do differently. And yet, something still feels difficult to put into words.
There are parts of you that don’t always communicate through logic. Sometimes our emotions, intuitions, fears, hopes, and inner conflicts are easier to access through images, stories, and metaphors.
Tarot offer a different doorway into self-understanding by acting as a mirror.
You don’t need to believe that tarot predicts the future for this group, in fact, we will be using the cards in a non-predictive way: they will be prompts for reflection, conversation, imagination, and deeper psychological exploration.
Why Use Tarot in a Therapy Group?
Tarot is a great tool for combining theories from art therapy, Jungian psychology, play therapy, and group therapy.
Traditional talk therapies tends to rely heavily on words and conscious reflection. Tarot bring in image, metaphor, intuition, imagination, and story, which works great for those of us who are visual learners!
Images can create surprising opportunities for insight: Sometimes we know something intellectually but haven’t fully felt it all the way. An image might help you have an emotional response before you understand why.
Alternatively, a symbolic image might allow you to approach a difficult subject indirectly, creating enough distance to explore it safely.
Working with tarot in a group also allows you to witness the many different ways people interpret the same image. One card can mean grief to one person, freedom to another, and transformation to someone else. In this group, there is no single “correct” interpretation.
The group provides a supportive space to be curious about those responses without needing to have everything figured out.
What We'll Explore
Over the six weeks, we’ll use tarot as a framework for exploring themes such as:
- Identity and self-understanding
- Relationships and attachment
- Emotional patterns
- Inner conflict
- Boundaries
- Fear, shame, and self-criticism
- Life transitions and uncertainty
- Values and decision-making
- Hope, possibility, and personal growth
- The stories we tell about ourselves
You may discover that some cards consistently resonate with you, and that you strongly dislike certain images or archetypes.
You may find yourself interpreting a card differently depending on what is happening in your life. All of this is useful information!
Who This Group is For
This group is for adults (18+). It is queer and neurodivergent affirming.
This group may be a good fit for you if you’re curious about yourself and want to explore your inner world in a creative, reflective way.
It may be especially interesting for people who:
- Enjoy symbolism, mythology, storytelling, or archetypes
- Feel drawn to tarot but want to explore it in a psychologically grounded way
- Find traditional talk therapy limiting or overly intellectual
- Are navigating a transition or period of uncertainty
- Want to understand recurring emotional or relational patterns
- Are interested in exploring different parts of themselves
- Want to develop greater self-awareness and self-compassion
- Enjoy creative and experiential approaches to therapy
You do not need to know how to read tarot.
You don’t need to own a deck, but you are welcome to bring your decks along.
What You Can Expect
This is a structured psychotherapy group facilitated by trained therapists.
Each session will combine therapeutic teaching, guided tarot exercises, individual reflection, experiential activities, and opportunities for voluntary group sharing.
In many of the exercises, you will be invited to draw cards and explore their imagery through your own personal associations and experiences.
Expect questions like:
- “What do you notice first?”
- “What emotion does this image evoke?”
- “Where do you see yourself in this story?”
- “What would you want to change about this scene?”
- “What might this character represent in your life?”
- “If this card were speaking to you, what might you imagine it saying?”
You will never be required to share something personal with the group that you aren’t comfortable sharing.
Commitment
This is a closed 6-week group that meets weekly for approximately two hours per session.
Because the group builds on itself, consistent attendance is encouraged. Your presence also contributes to creating a safe, predictable, and supportive environment for everyone participating.
Confidentiality and psychological safety are essential. Group agreements will be established at the beginning, and participants will be encouraged to approach one another with curiosity, respect, and compassion.
Cost
The cost of the 6-week group is $300 (or $50/week, with a $100 deposit at the beginning).
